1. Green Paper
==========
On 8th September the Prime Minister welcomed a Children's Green Paper
'Every Child Matters.' Every Child Matters sets out for consultation a
framework for improving outcomes for all children and their families, to
protect them, to promote their wellbeing and to support all children,
including disabled children, to develop their full potential. It focuses
on four main areas:

- Early intervention and effective protection
- Supporting parents and carers
- Accountability and integration - locally, regionally and nationally
- Workforce reform

Contact a Family welcomes the Green Paper although there are a number of
areas where we will be making comments about how services for disabled
children and their families can be improved in practice.

If you want to see what is in the Green Paper, a full and a summary
versions can be downloaded from http://www.dfes.gov.uk/everychildmatters
Paper copies of the full version cost £22 and are available from The
Stationery Office, PO Box 29, Norwich NR3 1GN Tel: 0870 600 5522
mailto:orders@theso.co.uk

Paper copies of the summary version (Ref. DfES/0672/2003) and the
children and young people's version (Ref. DfES/0673/2003) can be
obtained free from: DFES Publications, PO Box 5050, Sherwood Park,
Annesley, Nottingham NG15 0DJ Tel: 0845 6022260
mailto:dfes@prolog.uk.com

2. Residential special schools
==========
Joseph Rowntree Foundation has produced a new booklet 'The Right Place?
A parent's guide to choosing a residential special school' by Jenny
Morris. The free booklet gives information about the sort of questions
parents may want to ask when considering whether a residential school
would be the best option for their child. Although the legislation
quoted refers only to England and Wales, the tips for parents would be
useful for parents across the UK. You can order it by e-mailing
mailto:orders@yps-publishing.co.uk or download a PDF file from
http://www.jrf.org.uk/bookshop

3. Family Information Day
==========
Saturday October 18th between 10am - 3pm sees a free family day at The
Children's Trust, Tadworth, Surrey. Workshops on education, benefits,
behavioural issues and much more. Open to all families whose children
have been affected by acquired brain injury and also interested
professionals. For more information and to reserve a place contact 01737
365865 or 365088.

4. Aids and Equipment
==========
The Disability North Exhibition takes place on 8th, 9th and 10th October
at Gateshead International Stadium. It is free and a great chance for

5. National standards for the under 8's
==========
The Department for Education and Skills in England has published
standards for the under 8's in day care and childminding. You can see

6. Toilets on planes
==========
For many disabled people, using the toilet on a flight is very
difficult. The Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee has
produced some new guidance for the aviation industry and wants to know
what you think. You can see this at
http://www.dptac.gov.uk/pubs/aviation/consult/index.htm and responses
are welcome up to 17th October.

7. Shared Care
==========
For Shared Care Week, 22nd -28th September, the Shared Care Network
produced a new report on short break services for children with complex
care needs. You can see it at
http://www.sharedcarenetwork.org.uk/scn/dynamic/scn29.shtml

8. Parents sought
==========
Patient and Public Involvement Forums are looking for volunteers across
England with experience of using the NHS. You will get involved in
watching over the quality of health care and helping to find out what
local people think about health services. You can find out more at
http://www.maketimeforhealth.org

9. Rare disorders
==========
Contact a Family has been involved in a new linking project funded by
the Headley Trust. We have been actively contacting families who we know
have a child with a particular medical condition, where there is no
support group in the UK. We have then been arranging telephone
conferences so that a group of parents can speak to others across the UK
who have been affected. The first two conferences have been held for
Duane Syndrome and Norrie Disease. These two groups enjoyed the
experience and will be meeting again, so if you are affected by either
condition and would like to join in, please e-mail
mailto:liz@cafamily.org.uk We are also starting to look for families
affected by Townes-Brockes Syndrome, Henoch Schonlein Purpura and McCune
Albright Syndrome. Again, do let Liz know if you are affected by any of
these conditions and would like to speak to other families.

10. Parents Week
==========
20th October - 26th October is Parents Week, organised by the National
Family and Parenting Institute. There are events in many parts of the
UK, such as Family Fun Days, storytelling in libraries and so on. You
can see if there is anything local to you at
http://www.nfpi.org/data/parents_week/event_regions.htm

For Parents Week, Contact a Family will be launching a new booklet
'Making Contact' explaining all the ways of getting in touch with other
families with disabled children. You can order a free copy from
mailto:helpline@cafamily.org.uk
